Test your channel-flipping skills (and your sanity) in this unusual, yet simplistic game!
OLDTV is a fast-paced quiz game meant to test both your mental and physical reflexes under the premise of obsessively flipping through channels on an outdated television.
The core gameplay is simple - you're presented with a color spelled out and displayed in colored text. If the word matches its color (such as Red), you left click. If it does not match (for example, Yellow), right click. Just one incorrect answer ends the game, so you can't go too fast. Speed is still important though, as you have a limited amount of time to finish a level (called a region here) and make progress.
Each region adds a bit more to the core mechanic of matching colors and/or introduces a minor trick or obstacle. Once you're a few regions in, upside down or scrambled words, opposite controls and points where rapid clicking (or no clicking at all) are being thrown at you. It doesn't take long to feel mentally exhausted trying to keep everything straight.
Likewise, the aged CRT screen aesthetic quickly messes with your eyes. It doesn't take long for your eyes to adjust to it, but prolonged viewing will make looking at everything else uncomfortable and somewhat fatiguing. I wouldn't be surprised if other side effects were claimed by people, particularly with sensitive eyes or epilepsy. Thankfully, options do exist to remove some of the visual effects (including the faux-CRT screen).
The rapid fire presentation and visual style combine to form an effect where you get "zoned in" like a hypnotic trance. While I doubt the game has any subliminal content, it sure seems like the perfect place for it. Jokingly, one could easily call this "Brain Washing Simulator".
While my viewers were quickly put off by the visual style, I have to give OLDTV some credit for its design. It takes a simple mechanic, adds just a few little twists and somehow manages to melt your brain! You want a test of endurance, reflexes, vision and perhaps sanity? OLDTV's got you covered!
