December '19 Mighty Minis - Grinch Ornament!

Dr. Seuss was my favorite author as a child, and every holiday season I looked forward to watching How The Grinch Stole Christmas. It is with great pride that I present this month's Mighty Mini of the Grinch himself!

Made from Perler mini beads and adorned with a Grinchy green ribbon, this ornament is ready for the tree. Hopefully he doesn't stuff it up the chimney!

November '19 Mighty Minis - PaRappa Magnet!

22 years ago this month, PaRappa the Rapper was released for the Playstation... can you believe it? In honor of what is often referred to as the first true rhythm game, November's Mighty Mini is PaRappa himself!

Made from Perler mini beads and backed with a magnetic sheet (to match PaRappa's personality)!

October '19 Mighty Minis - Castlevania Bat Decor!

It's that time of year when things get spooky, so this month's Mighty Minis piece is a Castlevania bat! Made from Perler beads and given a ribbon loop, it'll make a fun addition to your Halloween (or video game) decor!

Extra Spooky Bonus: The outline around the bat glows under blacklight!

Minit - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Minit is a top-down adventure game (ala The Legend of Zelda) with a unique twist - you have one minute to live!

Early on, you pick up a cursed sword that kills you in 60 seconds then respawns you at your home (starting the countdown all over again). As cursed items go, you can't simply discard the blasted thing, so you set out to find a way to remove the curse.

You can find my thoughts on the game at 4:06:01 in the video above.

GOODBYE, BLIZZARD

Not actually Blizz's logo, but it might as well be.

Due to Blizzard's willingness to not only capitulate with China's censorship and human rights violations, but to enforce those views globally, I'm ceasing all support for their products and services.

As a result, there will be no more Hearthstone streams as I will be uninstalling BattleNet entirely. Additionally, I've removed the link to the Hearthstone page on this blog and will be replacing links to any of their sites or services with a link to "How To Support the Hong Kong Protesters".

To be clear, this is both a boycott and condemnation of Blizzard's actions. In the coming days or weeks, I assume Blizzard may attempt walking back their stance somewhat in the form of some half-hearted apology or other meaningless gesture. This (to me) will not suffice. Even reversing their decision entirely gives no assurance that they won't try it again (or something worse).

To engage in questionable and manipulative business practices for the sake of profit is bad enough, and while I complained about it, I still streamed games made by these companies in the hope that things could change. When Blizzard globally changed Hearthstone card art to comply with Chinese law, I complained about it, but still streamed the game. Now Blizzard is willing to globally enforce China's censorship of speech, and in doing so, tacitly approving of human rights violations in the name of profit. I refuse to support that in any form.

Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms is an incremental/clicker game based in the popular Dungeons & Dragons setting. While similar to Clicker Heroes or Tap Heroes with its fantasy adventure theme, Idle Champions contains more... everything, really.

September '19 Mighty Minis - Area 51 UFO Magnet!

This month's Mighty Mini commemorates (or perhaps commiserates) the brave souls attending the infamous "Storm Area 51" Facebook event scheduled for September 20. This UFO with alien pilot proudly displays the number '51', suggesting it frequents the secluded location and maybe even visits their gift shop!

Made from Perler Mini Beads and magnetic backing, this UFO is ready to land on a locker or fridge near you!

Celeste - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Celeste is a challenging platformer with a surprisingly strong story. As Madeline, you're trying to climb to the top of Celeste Mountain, but the journey is treacherous. There's far more than just rugged terrain to contend with, as it seems that both the mountain and Madeline are haunted.

RIP Peria Chronicles, We Never Knew Ye

Almost two years ago, I made a small post experiencing interest in the ambitious undertaking that was Peria Chronicles. Sadly, players were very underwhelmed by the recent Korean beta test and the game was scrapped as a result. Eight years of development and $8 million down the drain. The above video by MMOByte goes into greater detail if you're interested in knowing more about what happened.

I'm not sure I really understand why the game was cancelled after one beta test. It seems that players were unhappy with combat, but I guess the real disappointment was that the beta didn't include any of the creation tools that have been touted as one of the game's biggest features.

For the game's first beta, I'm not sure if we should've expected those tools to be available... that really depends on how much alpha testing was done and if Nexon thought the features were ready to enter the next phase. Obviously, Nexon decided to hold those back and focus on basics like combat.

Surprisingly, the hard pass from testers over tab-target combat was apparently enough to shutter further development entirely. Other games have had similar complaints in their early stages, and developers for those games responded by changing the combat system. One can assume then that either the rest of the game's mechanics heavily depend upon the combat system or that Nexon (for whatever reason) refuses to put more resources into meeting the testers' expectations.

Regardless, Nexon feels it's better to just cut their losses now. That's disappointing as a potential player, because Peria Chronicles seemed to have some promising features. Who knows how far along those features were really developed though? Maybe it's better to be disappointed by the game being scrapped than to have it release and be even more disappointed by promises that weren't delivered. We've already seen our fair share of those in recent years.

Fez - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Fez is a 2D puzzle platformer with an almost literal 3D twist (it's more of a turn than a twist, but close enough). You play as Gomez, who early on gains the ability to rotate his two-dimensional world and see things from different perspectives. Like any great power, it also comes with great responsibility - Gomez learns that his world is in danger and only he can protect it!

Hyper Light Drifter - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Hyper Light Drifter is an action adventure title influenced by classics like Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, only cranked to eleven in terms of scale. A number of large zones are immediately open to explore, but dozens of areas are either cleverly hidden or locked away. This game doesn't just reward you for exploration - it kind of requires it. Earning upgrades and finding some of the keys (or other unlock mechanisms) means scouring every inch of the map looking for hidden paths.

GNOG - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

GNOG is a casual puzzle game full of fanciful and colorful art. Each level is presented as a box, house, spaceship or other object that somewhat represents a monstrous head.

Alan Wake - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Alan Wake is an action adventure thriller with elements of supernatural horror. What begins as a relaxing vacation turns into a frantic nightmare as you (playing as the titular Mr. Wake) are attacked by shadows and your wife goes missing. Things get even weirder when your search for her yields pages to a horror story that's unfolding right before your eyes.

Some have called this game a masterpiece, and by what I've played of it, I can see why. It has an excellent atmosphere that is great at building tension and dread when combined with its encounters and mechanics. The forest is appropriately dark and foreboding at night, with just enough ambient rustling to keep your guard up. Discovering pages to the mysterious novel often provide additional (and unsettling) context or eerie foreshadowing of terrors lying just ahead. Supplies can be scarce in some locations, meaning you'll have to consider when to fight and when to flee (if you can flee).

Alan Wake is worth picking up at its current price, so obtaining it free is quite the deal!

August '19 Mighty Minis - Dragon Warrior Slime Coaster!

This month's Mighty Mini celebrates the 30th anniversary of the US release of Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest) for the NES. Made from Perler beads, this coaster kicks off the adventure with everyone's first encounter - the iconic slime!

On a personal note, Dragon Warrior was undoubtedly one of my favorite RPGs for the system. I've never compiled a personal list of best NES games, but Dragon Warrior would easily make the top 25.

Moonlighter - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Moonlighter is a combination of roguelike action-adventure game and business simulator. You brave the mysterious dungeons for loot, then use that loot to craft or upgrade gear... or sell it to customers in your shop!

TMNT Rescue-Palooza - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

This was a double feature (can you believe we're up to 190 of these?) and I fully intended to play Mario/DMCA Royale as the first game. It was unfortunately shut down earlier that week, so I took the opportunity to voice my opinion on Nintendo's heavy-handedness. I have the feeling Nintendo saw Royale as a threat to their newly-released Mario Maker 2, which is pretty silly as they're not nearly the same. They perhaps should be far more concerned with Mario Multiverse, but hey, I'm just a gamer... what do I know, right?

Moving on to fan-games that are still available (for now), the second game of the night was TMNT Rescue-Palooza. It's a brawler much like TMNT: The Arcade Game, but contains dozens of characters from the variety of Turtle properties. Think of it as the "deep dish deluxe pizza" of TMNT brawlers. It's definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of the old TMNT games.

July 2019 Mighty Minis - Infringio Keychain

This month's Mighty Mini pays remembrance to the short-lived Mario Royale, which was later changed to DMCA Royale starring Infringio. Changing the names and assets apparently wasn't good enough for Nintendo, who sent the game's creator (Infernoplus) a cease & desist, thus shutting the entire project down.

Let this month's Mighty Mini serve as a reminder that Nintendo is a corporation and as such is out to maximize profits and protect their properties (sometimes to a ludicrous extent). They aren't your friends any more than the next company, and can be just as slimy as the others when the opportunity presents itself.

The Mighty Mini itself features Infringio leaping over a tombstone, symbolizing that his spirit (and that of indie developers) will live on. It is made using Perler mini beads.

This should be the last of the builds from the stream!

More builds after the break!

Pics From the Marathon Stream! Part 2 - Brassle's Builds

While most people preferred making pixel art, brassle decided to make some great landscape art!

Some lava lamps in the riverbed
A totem of sorts

More after the break!

Pics From the Marathon Stream! Part 1 - Group Builds

I know it's been a while since the Minecraft Marathon Stream, but I've been kind of busy setting up the community server! Anyway, here's some screenshots of the builds (that I know of) people made that night!

This post covers stuff made by a variety of people (either as a joint effort or multiple builds in the same shot). Enjoy!

Transformers Logo Magnets in Perler Mini Beads!

I made these magnets as a gift for a family member (and huge Transformers fan). Mini beads were best for this project, since I wanted them to be relatively small. Unlike most others' patterns, I opted for including more than just 90 and 45-degree angles. I think they look much better as a result!

Rebel Galaxy - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Rebel Galaxy is an open world trading and combat game set in sci-fi space. Your aunt sent you a ship and a message to meet her at a space station to discuss an unusual artifact. Things don't quite go to plan when you arrive, and now you're going to have to work and/or pay for information.

In addition to my comments found at 4:21:36 in the video above, I must add that the music for this game is exceptionally good. I also have to agree with some of my viewers that the side missions can get repetitive pretty fast. That said, the VOD should give you a good idea if this is a game you'd enjoy.

I'm Now Streaming On DLive Too!

Restream had an important update which fully integrates DLive into their multistreaming platform. I've been holding back on streaming to DLive until Restream chat was working with it, and now it does!

In addition to my current platforms, you can now watch me at https://dlive.tv/Shenans starting tonight at 9pm ET!

June '19 Mighty Minis - Minecraft 10th Anniversary Magnet

This month's Mighty Mini is one of the largest yet! In honor of Minecraft's 10th anniversary (and the recent toppling of Tetris for highest selling game of all time), I give you my take on the "10 Years" design in Perler mini beads.

Kingdom: New Lands - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Kingdom: New Lands is a strategy game with the ultimate goal of protecting the crown from hordes of monsters. It plays like the original Kingdom, but includes much more content and multiple maps. My only real complaints about the original was that it lacked content and replayability, which New Lands heartily provides. You can hear more of my thoughts at 3:56:45 in the video above, but all you really need to know is that Kingdom: New Lands gets a thumbs up from me!

City of Brass (AND DEEPER) - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

City of Brass is an action adventure roguelike with the goal of reaching the center of the city. You begin armed with a sword and a whip (which has several interesting uses), but can find a variety of other items available as you venture in. It's a neat game, but I personally prefer Ziggurat just a bit more. You can hear more of my thoughts on City of Brass at 2:23:56 in the video above.

BONUS GAME - DEEPER

Deeper is a dungeon crawler that replaces Diablo's character classes with dodge rolls and a speed multiplier. It's in open alpha, so expect a few bugs. If you'd like to see a playthrough with some developer commentary, it starts at 2:32:03 in the video.

The Sims 4 - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

The Sims 4 is currently the latest in the popular life simulation series brought to you by Maxis/EA. As someone that hasn't played since the original Sims, I was interested in seeing how the series has grown. There's a lot of improvements to the graphics and UI, including a full rotating view. Characters have also been given many more features, both in terms of appearance and personality.

Pretty much every aspect of the game has grown since its first incarnation, but not enough to make the game feel unrecognizable. The overall experience feels very much the same, and that's not a bad thing because The Sims was quite the charmer back in its day. You can hear more of my thoughts on the game at 4:12:48 in the video above.

Stories Untold - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Stories Untold is an adventure puzzle game with some sci-fi and psychological horror elements. The game is divided into four episodes, each with their own mechanics (from classic text adventure to codebreaking). Episodes can be played independently, but are all connected by a story (which becomes clear during the final episode).

While the game as a whole feels like it could've been longer, each episode is just about the perfect length. Doing the same kind of puzzles can get tiring after a while, but the episodes make sure not to overstay their welcome. You can find more of my thoughts on the title at 3:32:07 in the video above.

Romans From Mars - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Romans From Mars is a simplistic shooting game that plays kind of like a tower defense, but not really. You fire a ballista at incoming waves of enemies before they reach your wall. Enemies that aren't killed in time deal one damage to your wall, and you lose if the wall reaches zero health.

This game is a textbook example of the cash-grab mobile game ported to PC. It quickly spikes in difficulty (level 19 is a good example) and sets up situations where you don't have enough currency to keep up unless you grind slowly or pay money. More annoying than that, the game doesn't always register mouse clicks (or perhaps somehow delays them), giving enemies some free time to advance at the start of a level and typically ruining that particular attempt altogether.

It's also fairly limited on defense options, with upgrades to the ballista, wall health, and a magic spell to freeze (or burn) enemies. While the title plays somewhat like a tower defense game, it's missing staples such as autofire turrets, mines/traps and barricades, to name a few.

You should probably skip Romans From Mars entirely. There's better shooters, tower defense games and mobile ports available, even for free.

Twelve Goofy Trolls!

Patrons, your trolls are ready! I'll be sending your Shenans Perlers and Thank You Cards very soon (hopefully tomorrow)!

Thanks again to all of you for reaching the first goal! I hope to have the Minecraft server up soon, and I'll be certain to announce that when it's ready!

May '19 Mighty Minis - Chewbacca Keychain

This month's Mighty Mini celebrates both Star Wars Day (May the 4th Be With You) and the late Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca in the film series.

Made from Perler mini beads, it's the perfect size for a keychain (or would that be a wookie-chain?). Now Chewie can be your co-pilot anywhere you go!

World of Goo - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

World of Goo is a physics puzzle game where you use various types of goo balls to build a structure that leads to a pipe, allowing you to collect the remaining goo at the end of the level. Unlike the vast majority of games I play on Fridays, I'm already somewhat familiar with this title (having got it on Steam some years back). It's a solid puzzle game with a well-paced learning curve. If you want to hear more of my thoughts on the game, check out 4:24:53 in the above video.

MilMo - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

MilMo is an MMORPG that's been around over nine years, but slipped under my radar until recently. I quickly learned the game originally appeared on Facebook, which explains how I didn't know of it for so long. Anyway, MilMo is now available on Steam. You can find my thoughts on the game at 4:12:48 in the video above.

Transistor - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Transistor is an action RPG displayed in the same perspective as Diablo and its ilk, but also incorporates a system for planning out moves and abilities to execute. It's a unique title both in terms of combat as well as character options, most notably the multi-purpose use of skills. They can function as hotkey abilities, modifiers to other abilities, or slotted as passive buffs. This allows for a multitude of potential skills - from stealth to AoEs to pets - all of which you can reconfigure at every checkpoint if so desired. While the hybrid combat won't appeal to everyone, the plethora of build options let you focus on a preferred playstyle, whether action-based or tactical. You can hear more of my thoughts on the game at 3:55:31 in the video above.

Zap Zap Zombie Cat & Cat Quest Demo - The Friday FREE GAME =DOUBLE= Feature!

It's another double feature with a theme - the internet's favorite animal, cats!

First up is Zap Zap Zombie Cats, a tower defense game. It shows some promise, but it could use some tweaking. You can hear more of my thoughts on it at 1:38:20 in the video above.

Cat Quest is an action RPG that's been polished to a shine and is about as cute as it could possibly be without crossing the line into nauseating. It feels a bit short even for a demo, but gives you a small taste of what to expect. The art and presentation are fantastic, and the gameplay is competent enough to be fun (based on what little of it there was in the demo, that is).

The Special Stream

On Saturday, April 27 (exact start time TBA), I'm having a marathon stream to wrap up the special offer and to thank each and every member of my community, patron or not!

Any pledges between April 14 up until stream end will extend the total duration of the stream! The sooner you pledge, the more time you add!

I'm super excited for this special offer and the upcoming marathon stream! I'd very much appreciate you joining my Patreon during this time, but frankly I'd be just as happy if you shared this post with all of your friends!

The Witness - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

The Witness is an open world puzzle and exploration game that feels somewhat like an updated version of Myst. You awake on an island that's seemingly been abandoned, with all manner of unusual devices strewn about. Logic is vital to progression, as entire sections of the island are locked away until you can solve the puzzling nature of the devices.

The early areas of this game are right up there with Portal in terms of teaching the player, which is no small feat considering it uses no dialogue to do so! The difficulty spikes a bit later on, especially if your exploration takes you to an entirely different part of the island! Overall, The Witness seems like an interesting title that puzzle-solvers should be fairly entertained with. You can hear more of my thoughts on the game at 4:25:58 in the video above.

Gun Princess Zero - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Gun Princess Zero is an action platformer that sits somewhere between Metroid and Mega Man (I'm calling it a Megatroid). You're a special agent sent in to hostile territory to locate and disarm four missiles. Overall, the game's not too bad, but it could use polish. My biggest gripe is the game's speed, which slows down and goes back to normal seemingly at random. You can listen to more of my thoughts on the game at 1:58: 41 in the video above.

April '19 Mighty Mini - Billy Lee Magnet

To celebrate the release of Double Dragon on the NES (April 8, 1988 in Japan), this month's creation is Billy Lee doing a jump kick! This magnet is made from Perler mini beads.

I've taken the liberty of giving this sprite a "16-bit remaster", with twice the colors of the original!

Friday, March 29, 2019

The Puppet Master - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

The Puppet Master is a top down puzzle game with a macabre twist. A witch has taken your soul and placed it in a doll, with the promise of letting you go if you can traverse her deadly traps! You can find my thoughts on the game at 2:10:04 in the video above.

Slime Rancher - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Slime Rancher is a sandbox farming simulation game with elements of exploration and experimentation in a colorful, stylized world. You play as a young rancher learning the ropes of the business on a far away planet. Though a long way from home, you still have access to your entrepreneurial network, including a trade station and personal messages via spacemail! It's a cute and mostly relaxing game, but there's quite a bit of depth in the whole slime-ranching system, particularly when it comes to the largo hybrid slimes. You can hear more of my thoughts on the game at 3:08:30 in the above video.

Thimbleweed Park - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Thimbleweed Park is a point-n-click adventure game created by the minds behind classics like the Monkey Island series and Maniac Mansion. Murder is afoot in the strange, small town and two agents are sent to find out what truly happened! You can find more of my thoughts in at 4:00:23 in the video above, but it's worth noting I enjoyed the game enough to continue and finish it the week after!

Axiom Verge - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Axiom Verge is about as close as one can get to Super Metroid (in terms of gameplay - the story is much, much different) yet still be unique. You play as a scientist that wakes up in a bizarre world after an experiment gone awry. As a fan of metroidvanias in general, I was quite happy with this title. Some of your acquired abilities differ slightly from Samus' skillset, but they're still interesting and offer new design space to challenge players with.

You can find a few more of my thoughts on the game at 4:01:12 in the above video, but it's safe to say this one is worth grabbing!

Age of Fear: Free World - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Age of Fear: Free World is a turn-based strategy game with combat reminiscent of tabletop skirmish games. While I found battles to be enjoyable enough, the campaign maps seemed way too basic. Being able to visit any location on the map made the "world" feel small and inconsequential. You can find more detailed thoughts on the game at 3:38:05 in the video above.

Jelly Mario & SMB Crossover - The Friday FREE GAME =DOUBLE= Feature!

Jelly Mario turns the classic platformer on its ear by adding squishy physics to everything. Controlling the iconic plumber is a lot harder than it looks, and while I imagine this game was made for laughs, there's a bit of challenge to be had here.

Super Mario Bros. Crossover likewise adds significant changes to the Mushroom Kingdom. Instead of altering physics, the game introduces a number of other NES characters to the playable roster, most of which have unique moves and abilities. You might be surprised just how different a familiar game can feel by changing heroes. The backdrop and enemies can be reskinned as well, making old levels feel like new again. In addition to SMB, you can also play through The Lost Levels and a set of Special levels that I believe have been handmade, but feel right at home!

BETHESDA BLUNDERS! Ep3 - Video Game Companies in 2018-19

Episode 3 of BETHESDA BLUNDERS! is here, this time with a special appearance by Blizzard! Honestly, way more AAA game publishers could've been in this one. It's like there's a contest recently of which one could be dumber and they all just keep going!

Wynncraft - MMOMG Replacement

The game for MMOMG this month has been switched from Kritika Online to Wynncraft. I decided to wait a week to announce this because I wanted to make sure we (that is, my regular viewers and I) found something we could settle on.

I don't intend to make a separate post for my thoughts on Kritika, so I'll leave my brief impressions of it here. It's less grindy than Soulworker but otherwise shares a lot of similarities. I would only recommend playing if you have several friends that intend to join you, as solo play is less rewarding (both emotionally and realistically as you progress much faster in a group).

On a side note, these types of MMOs that connect towns directly to dungeon instances (with no areas in between to explore or quest in) get repetitive way too quickly for my tastes. Also, why do the newer titles just feel like watered-down versions of Vindictus? They don't seem to be adding anything new or different to the experience. If anything they offer less, as most of them don't have destructible terrain features, traps to avoid, etc.

Anyway, you can join me either in-game (load up Minecraft and connect to play.wynncraft.com) or watch the stream live, Sunday - Wednesday starting 9pm ET (links can be found in the sidebar).

Oh, one other thing. If you want to play on Wynncraft, be mindful of which version of Minecraft you load up. Both 1.8.x and 1.13.x are less stable and can cause issues like instantly crashing your character upon login. Anything between 1.9 and 1.12.2 seem fine.

F76 Walking Into 2019 Like... - BETHESDA BLUNDERS Ep2

Is it possible that a game engine developed after the year 2000 is somehow not Y2K compliant? Leave it to Bethesda to oopsie themselves into another mess!

Super Meat Boy - The Friday FREE GAME Feature!

Super Meat Boy is a challenging (but fun) platformer with a well-developed learning curve and a slightly twisted sense of humor! You can hear further thoughts on the game at 2:13:43 in the video above.

MMOMG January '19 - Kritika Online

This month, we'll be trying out Kritika Online! My hopes aren't the highest, as it reminds me a lot of another title that's now infamous among my viewers, but I have a backup title just in case history repeats itself.
