Cabal Online Review

There's a decent amount of press and people that appreciate Cabal Online, but does it live up to the hype?

This is a game I've heard quite a bit about, mainly from other players who are very satisfied with the game. I had to give it a try to see what the fuss was about.

Starting up the game, I noticed some great graphics. Character creation options were kind of limited, but that's nothing new in the free-to-play genre. Combat animations were fluid and provided some great-looking effects, though I felt the camera angles left something to be desired. Though you can zoom in pretty far, the game seems to look better from a distance as if it was made more with that perspective in mind.

It was pretty easy to get started, with a decent tutorial set of quests. Nothing fancy here, just your standard "here's this NPC, here's that NPC, now go slay some monsters" kind of stuff, but it works well enough. Soon I was battling mobs outside of town and picking up new quests.

One thing I found really annoying right off the bat however was the amount of spam in chat. Gold seller posts outnumbered the regular chat posts, and it took a while to figure out how to block the spammers. This was a little disconcerting, as I dislike seeing gold spammers in games just milling about without consequence.

As I got through the first map and into the next, my experience was solid but a tad boring. The quests were mostly generic and did little to mask the grindy feeling of the game. Many of the other options in-game were limited to higher-level players, so there was really nothing else to do but kill stuff.

Another extremely annoying "feature" of the game is the automatic use of potions for skills. Say you've used up all your energy/mana on abilities, yet you've hit a hotkey to perform another special attack. In most games, you would get a warning saying you are too low on mana and cannot perform the skill. In Cabal, the game automatically uses up a potion to refill your energy, allowing the attack to be performed. I really disliked this, and tried to change the settings but to no avail. This one feature really turned me off to the game.

Still, there are a good number of people that feel Cabal Online is a solid title, and for the most part I would agree. If you can get past a couple of minor annoyances, this may be the game for you.

Final Rating: 3/5 stars
